Coaches

Susan Cagney - Sue started rowing at the University of New Hampshire, learning under Liz Hills O'Leary (Radcliffe coach for 20+ years).  After moving to the West Milford area in 2001, she started rowing singles and doubles, as well as sweep rowing with the East Arm Rowing Club ( www.eastarm.org ) in Greenwood Lake, NY.  In 2006, her East Arm boats won a variety of local races, culminating in winning the US Rowing Masters National Championships in Seattle, WA in the mixed C4+ event.   Sue also gives private rowing instruction (see her website www.rowforfun.com ).  Sue is a USRowing level 1 coach and a former EMT.  When she is not rowing, she is an occupational therapist who has worked in the Montville School District and is current at the West Milford Physical Therapy Centers ( www.westmilfordphyiscaltherapy.com ).

I truly believe that learning to row changes each and every person who tries it. Whether it's simply the accomplishment of learning a new skill (that many say they've always wanted to try), or experiencing the glory of being on the water in a fast, quiet craft powered by your own strength and endurance, or being compelled by the challenge to push yourself further than you thought possible, rowing is life-altering. Rowing is one of the only sports which can be pursued as an individual and/or a team. For me, rowing is different things at different times -- challenging, meditative, playful -- and sharing the incredible experiences it offers by teaching it to others is, I believe, my reason for being on earth.

Jeff Friedrichs - Also started rowing at the University of New Hampshire (that's where they met - on the crew team!).    While at UNH, Jeff was a member of the Men's Club 8+ that won their event at the 1981 Head of the Charles in Boston.  After graduating, he rowed with the Independence Rowing Club in Nashua, NH and again competed in the Head of the Charles, but this time in a single.   Jeff currently rows for the East Arm Rowing Club in the Men's C 4+.   In 2006, his boat started an excellent year by winning their event at the Cooper Cup in April.  After winning many local races, his boat also competed at the US Rowing Masters National where they won silver and bronze medals.   His team culminated their season by winning gold at the 2006 FISA World Masters Regatta held in Princeton, NJ.    Jeff is on the board of directors of the Foundation for Rowing Education.   When he is not rowing, Jeff is a software engineer with Hewlett-Packard and a member of the Mountain Creek Ski Patrol.
